The Levitation Charm was created in the 16th century by Jarleth Hobart as an attempt to prove that he was the first wizard to learn to fly. Other levitation charms include: the Hover Charm, the Rocket Charm and the Floating Charm with Wingardium Leviosa being the charm that is most commonly used. Wingardium Leviosa isn’t the only charm used by witches and wizards that also make objects levitate. Hermione Granger successfully taught Ron Weasley how to use the levitation charm in her famous quote, “It’s wingardium LeviOsa, not LeviosA!” In addition to emphasizing the correct syllable, there is a very specific s-shaped wand movement used during this charm and can be described as a “swish and flick!” Not to be confused with the Levicorpus charm, Wingardium Leviosa cannot be used to charm people to levitate, but has been known to make a person’s clothing hover above the ground.Ĭasting the Wingardium Leviosa charm requires the practitioner of the charm to enunciate the words correctly. Wingardium Leviosa is the levitation charm that makes objects levitate or fly, with the length of its effects and strength being dependent of the skill of the witch or wizard who casts the charm.
